Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND)

Airport in Tokyo, Japan

Introduction

Tokyo International Airport known as Haneda Airport, is one of the two primary airports that serve the Greater Tokyo Area, and is the primary base of Japan's two major domestic airlines, Japan Airlines (Terminal 1) and All Nippon Airways(Terminal 2), as well as Air Do, Skymark Airlines, Solaseed Air, and StarFlyer. It is located in Ōta, Tokyo, 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) south of Tokyo Station.

Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND)

Haneda was the primary international airport serving Tokyo until 1978; from 1978 to 2010, Haneda handled almost all domestic flights to and from Tokyo as well as "scheduled charter" flights to a small number of major cities in East Asia, while Narita International Airport handled the vast majority of international flights.

Haneda handled 75,316,718 passengers in 2015; by passenger throughput, it was the third-busiest airport in Asia and the fifth-busiest in the world, after Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Beijing Capital International Airport (Asia's busiest), Dubai International Airport, and O'Hare International Airport. It is able to handle 90 million passengers per year following its expansion in 2010. With Haneda and Narita combined Tokyo has the third-busiest city airport system in the world, after London and New York City.

Airlines & Destinations

Domestic Terminal 1 houses the JAL group including Skymark and Skynet, while Domestic Terminal 2 is home to ANA and affiliate Air Do. In 2010, Haneda opened a brand new International Terminal Building along with a new runway.

As Haneda operates a large number of domestic flights during the day, many international flights used to be restricted to late night or early morning arrivals and departures. While this is still the case for some flights, Japanese aviation authorities are now offering more daytime slots for international routes in an effort to increase tourism, especially as the 2020 Tokyo Olympics approaches. Passengers can now fly into Haneda from such cities as New York, San Francisco, Toronto, London, Paris, Frankfurt, Dubai and Sydney, in addition to many other cities around Asia.

Free shuttle buses run every 6 minutes between 05:00 and 24:00, connecting the International terminal with both Domestic terminals (outside security). Passengers transferring between the Domestic and International Terminals can also ride for free on the train or monorail by presenting a passport and connecting ticket to the information counter at the respective train or monorail stations.

International to Domestic connections

If you are connecting from an international flight to a same-day domestic flight on ANA or Japan Airlines, you have the option of proceeding to the domestic connection counter inside the International Terminal after clearing immigration and customs. Once you re-check luggage and clear security, a shuttle bus will transport you from the International Terminal to the secure area of Domestic Terminal 1 or Domestic Terminal 2.

Domestic to International connections, on the other hand, require exiting the Domestic Terminals to take the shuttle bus, train or monorail to the International Terminal.

Transportation

The easiest and most scenic way from Haneda to the city is the Tokyo Monorail running to Hamamatsucho for ¥490, from where you can connect to almost anywhere in Tokyo on the JR Yamanote line. The monorail has a station at each of Haneda's three terminals. From the International Terminal, trains reach Hamamatsucho in as little as 14 minutes on the nonstop services; the domestic terminals are about 5 minutes farther down the line. JR East maintains a Travel Service Center for foreigners in the International Terminal (open daily 7:45-18:30) where vouchers can be exchanged for the Japan Rail Pass and JR East Rail Pass, and where JR Kanto Area Passes can be purchased. The Tokyo Monorail is fully covered with any of these passes.

The other alternative is the private Keikyu (京急) line, which has two train stations at Haneda: one for the International Terminal and one serving both Domestic terminals. Keikyu trains run to Shinagawa (15 min, ¥410) and Yokohama (30-35 min via Airport Express [エアポート急行], ¥450). Some Keikyu trains from Haneda continue on to the Toei Asakusa Line, providing one-seat rides to the Ginza district (30-35 min to Higashi-Ginza, ¥560) and Asakusa (40-45 min, ¥610). Note that Keikyu fares quoted here are from the International Terminal station.

JR Passes are not valid on Keikyu Trains. If your final destination is somewhere along the Tokaido Shinkansen (i.e. Odawara, Atami, Shizuoka, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka) then you may want to consider using the Keikyu Line to Shinagawa to pick up the shinkansen, even if you have a Japan Rail Pass. Using the Tokyo Monorail will require you to take an additional train, the Yamanote Line, to either Tokyo station or Shinagawa.

Limousine Buses connect Haneda Airport with Narita Airport (90 minutes, ¥3,100) as well as main rail stations and hotels around the city. Most Airport Rapid Express [エアポート快特] trains on the Keikyu Line also run all the way to Narita Airport's terminals; these services are much cheaper than the bus (105 minutes, ¥1,750), but buses operate more frequently. Note that the "Airport Terminal 2" station that pops up in some route search engines refers to terminal 2 at Narita Airport, not Haneda!

Normal metered taxis to central Tokyo will cost anywhere from ¥4,000 to ¥10,000, plus a 20% surcharge between 22:00 and 05:00. An alternative is Kokusai Motorcars' fixed fare service for starting from ¥5,900 (¥7,100 at night) to most of central Tokyo, including Shinjuku and Shibuya. Uber offers fixed rates starting at ¥6,100-¥8,100 for rides to Chiyoda, Chuo, Minato, Shibuya and Shinjuku wards.

If you arrive on a late flight or need to catch an early flight, beware that there are no trains between 23:59 and 05:00 on either the monorail or the Keikyu line. Some limousine buses do operate after midnight, but such trips incur an additional "night surcharge".

Terminals

Haneda Airport has three terminals. The main terminals, 1 and 2, are connected by an underground walkway; a free shuttle bus runs between the main terminals and the smaller International Terminal every five minutes.

Haneda Airport is open 24 hours, although two domestic passenger terminals are only open from 5 AM to 11:30 PM. Terminal hours may be extended to 24-hour operation due to StarFlyer's late-night and early-morning service between Haneda and Kitakyushu, which began in March 2006. International Terminal is open 24 hours.

All three passenger terminals are managed and operated by private companies. Terminal 1 and 2 are managed by Japan Airport Terminal Co., Ltd. (日本空港ビルディング株式会社 Nippon Kūkō Birudingu Kabushikigaisha), while International Terminal is managed by Tokyo International Air Terminal Corporation (東京国際空港ターミナル株式会社 Tōkyō Kokusai Kūkō Tāminaru Kabushikigaisha). The critical facilities of the airport such as runways, taxiways and aprons are managed by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. As of March 2013, domestic terminals have 47 jetways altogether.

Terminal 1

Terminal 1 called "Big Bird" opened in 1993. This largest terminal in Haneda Airport replacing the smaller 1970 terminal complex. The linear building features a six-story restaurant, shopping area and conference rooms in its center section and a large rooftop observation deck with open-air rooftop cafe.

Terminal 2

Terminal 2 opened on December 1, 2004. It features an open-air rooftop restaurant, a six-story shopping area with restaurants and the 387-room Haneda Excel Hotel Tokyu.

The construction of Terminal 2 was financed by levying a ¥170 (from 1 April 2011) passenger service facility charge on tickets, the first domestic Passenger Service Facilities Charge (PSFC) in Japan.

International terminal

The current international terminal opened on October 21, 2010. The first two long-haul flights from the new terminal departed before midnight on October 30, 2010; they were originally scheduled to depart after midnight on October 31, but both departed ahead of schedule.

The international terminal has airline lounges operated by All Nippon Airways (Star Alliance), Japan Airlines (oneworld) and Cathay Pacific Airways (oneworld). The JAL lounge is also used by SkyTeam carriers at the airport.

Cargo facilities

Haneda is the third-largest air cargo hub in Japan after Narita and Kansai. The airport property is adjacent to the Tokyo Freight Terminal, the main rail freight yard serving central Tokyo.

Other facilities

In March 2012, Haneda completed a new "Premier Gate" facility for business jets, with parking available for up to 30 days. However, business jet operations are limited to eight slots per day, and these eights slots are shared with Japanese and foreign government aircraft, which receive priority in allocation over private operators. Haneda saw less than 2,400 business jet operations in 2013 and 2014; the operator of its sole business jet hangar, Wings of Life, became engulfed in scandal in 2015 after allegedly bribing a Japan Civil Aviation Bureau official to overlook its non-payment of rent.

Haneda is often used by foreign heads of state visiting Japan, as well as by the Japanese Air Force One and other aircraft carrying government officials. (Narita is also regularly used for such flights despite its much greater distance from central Tokyo.)

Japan Airlines operates training facilities and the Safety Promotion Center at the periphery of the airport. The ANA subsidiary ANA Wings has its corporate head office on the airport property.

The Japan Coast Guard operates a Special Rescue Base (第三管区海上保安本部羽田特殊救難基地 Dai-san Kanku Kaijō Hoan Hombu Haneda Tokushu Kyūnan Kichi) at Haneda, which is used by the Special Rescue Team, an elite 36-member aerial and underwater rescue unit.
