Spa town in Australia

Moree, New South Wales

Moree is a large town in Moree Plains Shire in northern New South Wales, Australia. It is located on the banks of the Mehi River, in the centre of the rich black-soil plains.

From the famous natural artesian spas to beautifully restored art deco heritage, Moree in northern NSW is a wonderful destination. Enjoy the soothing mineral-rich waters in Australia’s artesian spa capital. There are fascinating tours, the fun Moree Show, and a delicious food and wine festival.

Relax and rejuvenate in the famous natural artesian mineral waters of Moree, a delightful town in the beautiful Gwydir Valley in northwest NSW. These soothing thermal springs are naturally heated at 41 degrees Celsius and are popular for their therapeutic qualities – perfect for a revitalising escape.

The Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre is the major attraction, drawing thousands of visitors for the restorative properties in the mineral-rich waters from deep inside the Great Artesian Basin. There are other refreshing experiences in Moree, including remedial massages and beauty treatments.

You’ll find many more wonderful things to do and see in and around Moree, from fishing in the Gwydir delta waterways to heritage and agricultural tours and exploring fine art in the Moree Plains Gallery. The indigenous art collection in the gallery is one of the most significant in Regional NSW.

The main streets are dotted with beautifully restored heritage buildings you can explore on the Moree Heritage and Art Deco Guided Walk, which departs from the visitor information centre. A pretty riverside picnic spot is Mary Brand Park, named after Moree’s first store-keeper and hotelier.

The black alluvial soils around Moree support cotton, wheat, beef cattle, olive groves, vineyards and pecans. Take a tour of Stahmann Pecan Nut Farm’s Trawalla, the largest pecan farm in the Southern Hemisphere, and there are Cotton and Gin Farm Tours of Australia’s richest cotton-producing region.

Moree celebrates its thriving agricultural community with the vibrant Moree Show in April and the delicious Moree on a Plate Food and Wine Festival in May. Places to stay suit various budgets, from caravan parks and classic country pubs to motels.

Getting to Moree is easy by road, train or air. NSW TrainLink's Moree XPLORER provides daily services that run between Sydney and Moree.
